Sight Word Flashcards

Sight words are the cheat codes of reading — the super-common words (“the,” “and,” “is”) that kids need to recognize instantly instead of sounding out letter by letter. These twelve flashcards cover the highest-frequency Dolch words, printed big and bold for little eyes.

Cut them apart and keep the deck where reading happens. The five-minute routine that works: flip through the deck, set aside the ones they know cold, and practice just the tricky pile. When a tricky one becomes easy, it graduates to the “known” pile — kids love watching the easy pile grow.

Print on cardstock so the cards survive daily handling, and consider printing two sets for matching games: lay them face-down for sight-word memory match. Same learning, double the fun, zero extra prep.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are sight words?

High-frequency words kids should recognize instantly by sight — like “the” and “and” — instead of sounding out. Instant recognition makes reading smoother and faster.

How many sight words should we practice at once?

Start with 5–8. Add new ones only when the current set is solid — a small confident deck beats a big shaky one.

How often should we practice?

Five minutes a day beats thirty minutes once a week. Short, cheerful, consistent — that is the whole formula.

My child memorizes the order, not the words. Help?

Shuffle the deck every time. If they “know” the words only in order, they are memorizing the sequence — shuffling fixes it instantly.
